Tom wore his yellow raincoat and held an umbrella as rain began to fall near the old stone estate. He worked as an inspector, wearing an official silver badge on his coat. A tall wire fence stood around the property, separating the yard from an old abandoned coal mine and a deep mud pit. Out back, workers used a dredge machine to clear a stream, while piles of wet lumber rested under a tarp. Tom knew that time was an important factor today because bad weather was approaching fast.

He walked toward the main entrance to inspect the building envelope. The thick walls were constructed from heavy cement, white lime, and smooth interior plaster, with black waterproof pitch painted along the foundation. Outside, Tom set up a tall ladder to secure a rattling window shutter, then stepped onto a small stool to examine a cracked window pane. Years of dirt had given the glass high opacity, so almost no natural daylight reached the room inside. Behind it, a dark curtain hung still. Tom loosened the metal bolt on the heavy entrance, turned the round brass knob, and pushed the door open.

Inside stood a historic workshop that once housed a grain mill and a hot blacksmith forge. Here, early craftsmen used to shape many kinds of metal, including pure iron, soft lead, golden brass, and artistic bronze. Near the wall, Tom examined an old gear made from a tough steel alloy. He needed to lubricate a stiff foot pedal so the machine turned freely without screeching. Walking past a low training hurdle left on the floor, he picked up an oil can, added fresh fuel to the backup generator, and carefully tested every electrical element to prepare for power cuts.

Next, Tom inspected the storage room. A sturdy wooden table held a small glass jar of screws, an old wooden barrel, an empty water bucket, and a heavy metal pail. Along the wall, every high shelf and slide-out drawer carried a clean paper label and a numbered tag. The room held rolls of strong canvas, soft white linen, light cotton, and tough blue nylon, next to jackets made of warm leather. Old sample cards demonstrated how weavers used to knit yarn and weave plant fiber into warm fabric. Tom placed loose screws into small plastic boxes and filed them by storage section.

Tom then moved into the caretaker’s living quarters. He flipped a wall switch, and a bright overhead bulb lit up the room. A large kitchen refrigerator kept food cold, while a mini fridge beside it stayed clean and empty. In the corner, an upright vacuum cleaner stood beside an electric cooling fan. To stay ready for the storm, Tom turned on a small portable radio. He also gathered a strong handheld flashlight, an emergency oil lantern, and a wide-beam spotlight. On the desk, he placed his digital camera next to the landline phone and an old emergency bell.

Before locking up, Tom helped an elderly worker lift a heavy wooden chest. Inside, safely wrapped in velvet, lay a sparkling mineral crystal and a tiny polished diamond from the valley’s old collection. Satisfied with his work, Tom pulled each door handle shut and secured the locks. The old workshop was fully ready for the long night.
