Guardians of the Valley#

Theme: People can protect animals by understanding their habits and caring for their homes.

Leo was an animal keeper at a green valley reserve, while his friend Dan was an old shepherd who lived by simple subsistence farming. Together, they worked hard so wild beasts and farm animals could peacefully exist in the same mountain habitat. Recently, a scary winter illness arrived, and Leo was worried about an epidemic. A deadly virus or dangerous bacteria could spread quickly through the herds. Even a tiny germ or invisible microbe could make any weak creature a helpless victim.

In early spring, many forest animals undergo big changes. Some had remained dormant during their long winter hibernation, but now they began to wake up. Across the hills, a guard dog would bark to warn strangers, and a distant lion would roar in the wind. Leo loved studying their natural behaviour. Under the stones, beetles would crawl, and small spiders would creep through dead leaves. In the trees, birds gathered twigs for each new nest, while bees worked inside a wild hive, filling every tiny wax cell with honey.

To keep the valley safe, Leo had to track animals that left only a light foot trace in the mud. He used an optical camera to see far into the valley and an acoustic device to hear faint sounds. Because many hunters were nocturnal, he worked late into the night. Leo had great intelligence and an intuitive feeling for nature. He believed every wounded creature had the potential to heal and return to the forest. Their bodies were fast and flexible, and their ears were extremely sensitive.

Danger was never far away. A hungry predator would always search for easy prey. Dan’s young lambs were especially vulnerable at night. However, Dan did not want to exterminate the mountain wolves. Instead, the men built a thick thorny hedge and a solid wooden barrier. Dan checked every metal bar along the fence. He kept his horses inside a warm stable and stored his winter food inside the dry barn.

Sometimes Leo had to treat an injured beast as a temporary captive. He put it in a spacious cage that was clean and functional. He understood wild instinct very well. When an animal was frightened, it showed defensive actions; it might try to bite with sharp teeth, just as a bee might sting if disturbed. Leo never tried to tame these wild patients. Instead, he would softly rub healing oil on a wound so the beast would not suffer.

To stay alert, Leo and Dan would alternate watches between the farm and the forest. By respecting nature’s rules, the two men kept the valley safe and healthy for every living thing.

为了守护山谷的安全，利奥必须追踪那些在泥地里只留下浅浅足迹的动物。他使用光学相机远眺山谷深处，并用声学设备去聆听微弱的声响。因为许多捕食者都是夜间活动的，所以他工作到深夜。利奥拥有极高的智慧和对自然的直觉感知。他相信每一只受伤的生灵都有潜能康复并重返森林。它们的身体敏捷而灵活，耳朵也极其灵敏。

危险从未远离。饥饿的捕食者总是在寻觅容易得手的猎物。丹的幼崽羊羔在夜晚尤其脆弱。然而，丹并不想去消灭山里的狼群。相反，这两个人筑起了一道茂密多刺的树篱和坚固的木制屏障。丹仔细检查了沿篱笆分布的每一根金属栏杆。他把马匹关在温暖的马厩里，并将过冬的粮食储存在干燥的谷仓内。

有时，利奥不得不将受伤的野兽作为临时的圈养动物进行医治。他将其安置在一个宽敞、干净且实用的笼子里。他非常理解野生的本能。当动物受惊时，会表现出防御性的举动；它可能会试图用锋利的牙齿去咬人，就像蜜蜂受到打扰时会蜇人一样。利奥从未试图去驯化这些野生病患。相反，他会轻柔地在伤口上涂抹具有疗效的药油，这样野兽就不会感到痛苦。
