Course Advising Day#

Theme: A student helper explains school subjects and numbers to new university students.

Leo worked at the university help desk on advising day. Many new students came to ask about their course choices. One student loved reading about societies, so Leo suggested sociology and politics. Another wanted to understand human behavior through psychology. Leo also advised a quiet boy who loved deep thinking to study philosophy and formal logic. On the same desk, colorful guidebooks for history and geography were arranged neatly side by side.

Next, several business students arrived with questions. A young woman wanted to learn about markets, so Leo introduced her to economics and marketing. For working with business numbers, she needed accounting and a course on how to audit company records. She also asked about a famous corporate merger in the news. Leo then explained how modern food production depends on agriculture, and how international trade relies on careful logistics to move products around the world.

Science and technology fans had questions too. Leo talked about living cells in biology, chemical reactions in chemistry, and forces in physics. For students who liked building machines, engineering was very popular, especially modules in mechanics and electronics. However, Leo reminded them that every science student needed strong skills in maths and statistics to analyze their laboratory results.

To help them prepare, Leo drew simple numbers on a whiteboard. He reviewed basic arithmetic, shapes in geometry, letters in algebra, and rates of change in calculus. “Five plus five gives a sum of ten,” he said. “The total is ten. When both sides are balanced, we write an equation to show they are identical. If you see ten minus two, you simply subtract two. You can multiply two by three to get six, or divide six by two to get three.”

Leo then explained other parts of numbers. “In division, the number being divided is the dividend, and what is left over is the remainder,” he said. He wrote a fraction to show a rational number. He told them that room size was a fixed parameter today, while the number of visitors was an unpredictable variable. A group could have an even number of four members or an odd number of three. To find the mean test score, they should add all marks together and divide by the class size.

Finally, Leo spoke about course limits. If student numbers were to double, the university would open a second room; if they were to triple or quadruple, they would move to the main hall. Because there were multiple popular classes, each room had a maximum of forty students and a minimum of ten. “We have approximately fifty students waiting in the hall right now,” Leo laughed as he ended the session, happy to help everyone find the right path.
